PrEP at avi: Your comprehensive protection against HIV

At our family doctor practice avi Lichtenberg in Berlin, we have recently been offering a PrEP consultation.

PrEP, pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medicinal, preventive measure that can provide effective protection (approximately 100%) to people at increased risk of HIV infection.

This treatment is carried out by qualified doctors who are licensed to prescribe PrEP. Even as a new patient, our experienced medical team in Lichtenberg will guide you through every step of this process — from initial consultation to continuous aftercare.

How does PrEP work?

This medication, formerly known under the trade name Truvada®, contains two of the active ingredients of a possible triple combination for HIV treatment. It prevents infection by the HIV virus should it enter the body, for example through unprotected sex. It is important to know that PrEP thus protects against HIV, but not against other sexually transmitted diseases, which require additional preventive measures (e.g. condoms) to prevent.

Who can benefit from PrEP?

PrEP is recommended for people who are at increased risk of HIV infection. This can include people with HIV-positive partners, people with changing sexual partners and people from other groups who, according to medical assessment, are at increased risk (usually from practicing unprotected sexual intercourse). If this risk exists, the costs are covered by the statutory health insurance funds.

PrEP consultation with avi Lichtenberg

Our PrEP consultation includes three important types of appointments, which ensure that you are comprehensively informed and supported:

PrEP consultation date:

A detailed discussion to determine whether PrEP is right for you.

PrEP launch date:

vBefore you start PrEP, we carry out a comprehensive health assessment. In addition to a basic examination, this also includes HIV and other STI tests, as well as checking the vaccination status and your kidney function.

PrEP control date:

These appointments include regular medical examinations, in particular examination of kidney function and discussions regarding treatment adherence (if the drug is taken regularly) and re-evaluation of the indication (e.g. change in sexual behavior). Regular testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is routinely included (Sexual-Transmitted Infections, STI) to ensure that they can be identified and treated at an early stage.

Who will care about you?

You will be assisted by our experienced doctor Dr. med Marc Auell , who is characterized by his membership in professional associations in the area of HIV and STI care. As a full member of DAGNÄ e.V. (German Association of Physicians in the Care of HIV-Infected Persons) and the DSTIG (German STI Society — Society for the Promotion of Sexual Health), he is always at the cutting edge of science and is committed to providing optimal medical care for his patients.

Access to PrEP and reimbursement

Since 2019, statutory health insurance companies in Germany have been covering the costs of PrEP for people with an increased risk of HIV. If we determine during your consultation that there is such a risk, we can prescribe the medication for you and start and supervise the treatment.
